Too Busy Working to Make Money

Sitting in the smoke filled room with my wife’s eighty-two year young grandpa, I struggled to breathe as he told me, “Brian, I was always too busy working to make money.”

A lot of us probably feel that way don’t we. We are working harder for less. In our weekly meetings we may hear these words: Hunker down. Protect. Defend. Make cuts. Tighten our belts and on and on the discussions go.

Over the past several months the number of successful business men and women who have made these statements are more than a few. It is fashionable in a struggling economy for those in management to speak of such issues. While I am not trying to minimize the importance of smart business decisions, what I see are previously successful businesses failing to move forward, to be creative and promote their brand. I personally have experienced many businesses who admit the need to improve their sales and marketing programs but they struggle with their decisions because of the associated costs.

The trite phrase “You’ve got to spend money to make money” has validity. If you want to grow your business, encourage your management team to review the company approach regarding investing money in areas that will improve your position in the marketplace. You can be confident there will be a return on investment when you spend your sales and marketing dollars wisely.
